This advanced level course will help students deepen their understanding of the integration of individual differences on all domains of development and how they may manifest in mental health challenges. Neurotypical and neurodiverse development will be considered, and aspects of infant mental health will be addressed. The course will combine synchronous and asynchronous class meetings to achieve its learning objectives. The course will include a review of theory and concepts associated with the DIR/Floortime model, developmental psychopathology, and assessment of the interplay between physiological and psychological vulnerabilities. Students will gain experience analyzing the literature related to infant and early childhood mental health and developmental differences and how individual differences impact functional emotional developmental capacities. Cross-cultural appreciation, social justice understanding, and diversity awareness will be integrated within the frame of infant and early childhood mental health. Course meets on Mondays, 11 am - 1 pm PDT, beginning 1/8/2024.
