Organization Studies is an umbrella domain of inquiry that is both multi-disciplinary and multi-leveled in relation to theory and practice. The field is often divided into macro, mezzo, and micro aspects. The macro is explored in the field of organization theory and is rooted in sociology and anthropology; the mezzo or mid-level explores theory of groups and teams and is rooted in social psychology, group dynamics, and social learning theories; the micro level is explored in the field of organizational behavior and is rooted primarily in psychology and political science among others. Each of these domains has various sub-disciplines which have their own theoretical and practice perspectives.

This course will engage the three levels of analysis from a change perspective. This means that when we examine organization structure as studied in organization theory, we will be asking questions about structural change. When studying culture, we will be inquiring about cultural change, and when inquiring about organization behavior, we will be inquiring about behavioral change.
Systems Approaches to Leadership, Organizations, and Society (SALOS) provides an introduction to systems thinking in action, exploring the methodological aspects of social systems design with special focus on the conceptual tools of the social change agent. The course will introduce the fundamental aspects of systems thinking as an effective approach for dealing with simple and complex societal and organizational challenges. Emphasis is placed on the application of evolutionary systems design to the creation of conditions that foster sustainable organizational development and transformation. Exercises and assignments will offer students the opportunity to apply the ideas of the course in their own chosen contexts or in example situations offered by the instructor.

In HOD-838, we will critically explore contemporary debates, theories, research approaches, ethical issues, and influences of multiple forms of current and emerging forms of media, AI technologies, and disruptive innovations. Interdisciplinary issues may range from digital colonization and global power dominance to the personal use of iPhones and ChatGPT.

We will consider the many forms of media, AI technology, and disruptive technology's historical, current, and emerging political, socio-economic, human, organizational, and global impacts. Together, we will critique academic and professional literatures, frameworks, and emerging events. The course will culminate in final individual or collaborative deliverables including capstone papers or project reports, presentations, and reflections.

Students will have an (optional) opportunity to co-design a project relating to AI, media, and innovation at Fielding.

In this course we will all learn together and from each other.

The course deliverables can be individual or collaborative with two or more working together.
