The focus of this course is on the application of the DIR® model and the formulation of clinical cases through the lens of relational models of development and infant mental health theory. Caregiver/child and lifespan relational issues in various contexts (e.g., home, school, work, community) will be emphasized. This course provides students an opportunity to integrate and apply their DIR® knowledge from prior courses to expand their understanding of the Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities, FEDCs 1-9, the influence of individual differences, and the impact of relationships, with an emphasis on the application of Floortime™ principles and strategies. Conceptual and theoretical constructs related to current practice and/or professional experiences will be explored.

This course introduces students to the developmental, individual differences, relationship-based (DIR®) model. Lectures, readings, class discussions, and assignments allow students to learn about the DIR® theoretical framework, to understand how early experiences impact development, learning, mental health, and family dynamics. Evidence-based research and application of the model will be explored. Students will be provided with an interactive learning environment, sensitive to the principles of adult learning, to become familiar with the first 9 Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities (FEDCs) and Floortime® strategies. Students will apply DIR® thinking to personal and professional experiences across all capacities (FEDCs) to understand the interplay between development and individual differences in the context of relationships.
