The focus of this course is on the application of the DIR® model and the formulation of clinical cases through the lens of early childhood relational health theory, and more specifically DIR®. Caregiver/child and lifespan relational issues in various contexts (e.g., home, school, work, community) will be emphasized. This course provides students with an opportunity to integrate and apply their DIR® knowledge from prior courses to expand their understanding of the Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities, FEDCs 1-9, the influence of individual differences, and the impact of relationships, with an emphasis on the application of Floortime™ principles and strategies. Conceptual and theoretical constructs related to current practice and/or professional experience will be explored. This course includes discussion of students’ clinical experiences, integration of reading materials and theory, as well as recent research, to achieve course learning objectives. In summary, students will explore key concepts related to the DIR® approach by analyzing clinical material supported by readings and class discussion.
